What Visitors Need to Know about the White Mountain National Forest Access and Services during the Government Shutdown

The federal government shutdown will affect certain operations and services within the White Mountain National Forest (WMNF).

What Remains Open and Operational:

  • WMNF campgrounds will remain open for visitors.

  • Public restrooms, including those at Lincoln Woods, along the Kancamagus Highway, and other key areas, will continue to be available.

  • Parking lots and trail heads across the Forest will remain open, and the WMNF will continue enforcing and collecting the standard $5 daily parking fee.

  • Essential personnel, including law enforcement officers, firefighting teams, disaster response crews, and some rangers will continue their critical work.

What Will Be Closed or Suspended:

  • All WMNF Visitor Centers and Ranger Stations are closed effective immediately.

  • Non-essential rangers have been furloughed, and all volunteer programs have been canceled until further notice.

We encourage all visitors to plan ahead, take extra precautions while enjoying the Forest, and remain mindful of the limited staffing and services during this time.

The White Mountains Visitor Center located off I-93, Exit 32, in North Woodstock along with other regional Visitor Centers remain open and are a valuable resource for information, guidance, and assistance when traveling throughout the White Mountains.
